Too Tired to Run Video

Author: Admin Date Posted: September 13th, 2008

A friend of mine filmed this video (his first ever) for my EP title track, ‘Too Tired to Run’, shot on a chilly day in Edinburgh. I think its not bad for his first effort, and it was good fun on the day!

Enjoy!

Study Finds Music and Personality are linked

Author: Admin Date Posted: September 11th, 2008

According to a new study of over 36,000 people across the world, they type of music you listen to and your personality is closely linked. (weren’t we are aware of that anyway?)

The research was carried out by Professor Adrian North of Heriot Watt University, is the largest study of its type.

His research concluded that classical music fans were shy, while heavy metal fans were gentle and at ease with themselves.

Prof. North said the research was “significant” and “surprising”.He said: “We have always suspected a link between music taste and personality. This is the first time that we’ve been able to look at it in real detail. No-one has ever done this on this scale before.”

The Professor believes his research could have many uses in marketing toward music fans, adding: “If you know a person’s music preference you can tell what kind of person they are, who to sell to.

“There are obvious implications for the music industry who are are worried about declining CD sales.

“One of the most surprising things is the similarities between fans of classical music and heavy metal. They’re both creative and at ease but not outgoing.

“The general public has held a stereotype of heavy metal fans being suicidally depressed and of being a danger to themselves and society in general. But they are quite delicate things.”

The study asked the 36,000+ people to rate 104 styles of music and asked questions about their personality. The study continues, and Prof. North is looking for people to take part in his online questionnaire.

A Trip Down Memory Lane…

Author: Admin Date Posted: September 9th, 2008

After years in and out of various rock bands primarily as a bassist, I started to wander down memory lane…

The first ‘band’ i was in was one with my brother and my second cousin, we jammed Nirvana covers (well it was the early nineties after all!) in our school music room but we never got as far as playing any gigs!

The second band I played in was an indie-style, ‘Gomez’ style band. This was my first real experience of playing in front of an, albeit rather small, crowd. I played quite a few shows with the band as a bass player, which is what I was trained to play at school and by my father who played as a bassist for many a band for over 30 years.

Part 2 tomorrow…

Can you Define Music?

Author: Admin Date Posted: September 8th, 2008

There have been many varied definitions of music, dependent on the writer’s idea of, or appreciation for, music. One man’s music is another man’s noise. And he defines accordingly.

One says Nevin is music and Bach is noise. One declares Mozart to be noise and Stravinsky, music. Another reverses the definition. Even the dictionary tells us that “music is the art of combining tones to please the ear.” Read the rest of this entry »

The best ways to learn how to play Guitar

Author: Admin Date Posted: September 7th, 2008

Here are some of the more common ways to learn to play the guitar. Try each method to see what works best for you.

Group Lessons: Learning guitar in a group setting can be less intimidating for the beginning musician. You not only get the benefit of having a teacher to help you along you can often judge your progress by where the other students are in the class. The worst part about taking guitar lessons in a group setting is the teachers time is divided so you may not get as much attention as you might need.

Private Lessons: This is the best way to learn to play the guitar if you can find the right teacher. The instructor can gauge your progress each week and custom design your lessons for you. You have your teachers’ undivided attention and you can ask anything you feel is not clear. Read the rest of this entry »

How to ‘Pick’ the right Plectrum

Author: Admin Date Posted: September 7th, 2008

Regardless of whether you are a guitar novice or already have some training in playing the guitar, the following guidelines will prove useful. You shall be told how to properly hold a pick (plectrum). “That’s ridiculous!” you may say. “It’s so very basic, what’s there to know?” But following my instructions could help you improve your guitar play quickly and easily.

Picks used to be earlier made from animal bone or tortoise shell, but nowadays they are mostly made of plastic. They come in various sizes and shapes. I recommend beginners to use medium size picks because these are the easiest to play with. This is of course only a suggestion, a general rule of thumb and not an absolute. You might experiment with picks of different shapes, sizes and materials to find out the one most suitable for yourself. Also because picks get easily frayed and perhaps, as easily lost, it is a good idea to keep quite a few picks with you at home. Having a few picks in reserve is not difficult as they are fairly cheap. Read the rest of this entry »
